How often do management aspirants get opportunities to handle new interns of a company during their own internship? That’s just the kind of experience that molded St. Kabir institute of professional Studies’ (SKIPS) Rajat Singh’s learning during his June-July internship stint with the Adani Group.
Rajat worked on a project titled- “Employee Life Cycle at Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Limited, Mundra.” It was one phenomenal rollercoaster ride for Rajat with the Indian multinational conglomerate company. He believes that he has come out transformed by the experience and better prepared to take on the corporate challenges.
How has it been like for this SKIPS student?
Insights into the functioning of a large organization
According to Rajat, Adani Group has a fairly informal work culture and employees get enough room to stay creative. “The company doesn’t expect interns to know everything, but you should have the willingness to learn,” as he found out. “Working with the Human Resources team meant that there was a new experience every day. From handling 25 new interns to familiarizing three new employees with superior authorities, I had varied tasks. It ensured that not only did I get to learn how HR worked in an organization but I also understood things about work culture, interpersonal skills, etc,” he asserts.
Coping with the challenges
As it was his first direct brush with the corporate world, Rajat had to deal with his fair share of challenges as well. He kept evolving his strategies, from reading manuals to getting insights from professionals, to deliver on the responsibilities given to him and drawing from the theories he had picked from his classroom sessions at SKIPS. “Working in HR, you need to have constant human interactions. I learned the importance of networking because it improved my efficiency in the organization. It is also important to report your work and get credit when it is due as it makes the right impression about you,” he reveals his experience.
SKIPS training sees him through
Rajat also talks about the different initiatives at SKIPS, Ahmadabad, which had prepared him for the internship experience. It enabled him to put his best forward during this crucial period of his professional transition. He recounts the diverse initiatives at the B School, which have been building blocks in his journey so far. “First of all, resume building, which involves crafting video resume helps us make the best first impression. Guest lecturers visited SKIPS and talked to us about the contemporary corporate environment and told us what’s expected of us. We were made to go through Mock interviews that helped us stay on top of our confidence. Together these initiatives got us ready for the industry,” he ends.
